How-to: Unclog Your Sink Without Iffy Chemicals

Water running down a drain

Clogged drain and you don't want to reach for those harsh-smelling drain cleaners? Using a simple mix of ingredients you probably have in your home already, you can unclog your sink naturally in a matter of minutes!

  • Flush your drain with a pot of boiling hot water – allow all of the water to drain through completely.
  • Pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by ½ cup of vinegar.
  • Cover the drain opening to let the baking soda & vinegar mix do its magic.
  • After 5-10 minutes, uncover and flush the drain again with boiling hot water.

That’s it! The baking soda and boiling water work to loosen up any grime that’s built up within the drain pipe. Once the vinegar is added, the reaction it has with the baking soda helps blast the grime loose even more – and the hot water at the end will flush it all away.

For deep, tough clogs, you may need to add a plunger and some elbow grease. Try flushing multiple times with boiling water to loosen grease and grime.
