Benzyl Acetate

Posted May 23rd, 2008 by GailCSLP

Benzyl Acetate was linked to cancer and I was wondering since it is also classified as a acedic acid does that mean that vinegar could also be concidered cancer causing since it is acedic acid? Also many products state that they have fragrance. Is benzyl acetate in fragarace? Since many different companies do no list what is in there fragrances.

Thank you for your assistance

Gail

Benzyl acetate is not an acid, it is an ester. Generally, it is not possible to categorize a substance as a carcinogen based on its chemical class (acid, alcohol, amine, ester, etc.). Further, benzyl acetate is neither a known carcinogen, a probable carcinogen, nor a possible carcinogen. Rather, it is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as Category 3, insufficient data to assess its carcinogenicity in humans.

Benzyl acetate is the primary constituent of jasmine oil, ylang-ylang oil, and tobira oil. It is also made synthetically, that is, from petrochemicals. It is widely used in synthetic fragrances because of its floral scent.

Acetic acid is not a known or suspected carcinogen.
